PURPOSE: To obtain a compact display device whose image quality is high, which is easily handled by providing a light valve means, a synthesizing means, a projection optical means, and making an optical length from the projection optical means to respective transmission type liquid crystal panels the same. CONSTITUTION: The synthesization of an optical axis is performed by using semi-transparent prisms 30(30a, 30b). Polarizing boards 36 to 41 and single-color filters 42 to 44 are arranged, so that liquid crystal panels 33 to 35 are interposed. For example, light emitted from a light source 45 is transmitted through the color filter 42 so as to be red light and enters the liquid crystal panel 33 through the polarizing board 39, then enters the prism 30a through the polarizing board 36. The light beams emitted from the light sources 46 and 47 are the same. The red light entering the prism 30a is reflected by a semi-transparent film 48, green and blue light beams are transmitted as they are, the light beams of respective colors are synthesized to the optical axis of a lens 31 so as to face to the lens 31. In this case, the optical lengths from the lens 31 to the respective panels 33 to 35 are the same. |
