PURPOSE: To provide a projection type liquid crystal display element where brightness is improved and irregular luminance on one display pixel is completely reduced, and by which a high-quality display picture is obtained. CONSTITUTION: This projection type display device is equipped with an elliptical condensing mirror 5, a light source 4 arranged near the 1st focal point of an ellipsoid, a collimator lens 6 having a focal point near the 2nd focal point of the ellipsoid, and an optical modulation element array constituted by two- dimensionaly arranging an optical modulation element 2 having a lens array on the collimator lens 6 side and having area S. When it is assumed that the length of a light emitting part is L, the square of the ratio of the minor axis to the major axis of an ellipse isμ, the focal length of the lens 6 is (f), a distance between the lens array and the aperture part of the modulation element 2 is (m), and refractive index between the lens array and the modulation element is (n), an expression is satisfied.
