PURPOSE: To obtain a magnetic tape controller having high reliability by enabling a host device to recover non-written data in physical block unit when the execution of retrial is needed. CONSTITUTION: Respective packets 31 which are the writing data unit sent by an on ordinary writing command from the host device are added with additional information of headers 31a and trailers 31c respectively before and behind data parts 31b. The physical block 30 written on a magnetic tape is a connection of plural pieces of the packets 31 and is connected with a logic block number 32 including the information such as the number of the packets connected to its last. All of the respective packets 31 are composed of 32×n bytes and are composed of the headers 31a of 32 bytes, the data parts 31b succeeding thereto and a trailer 31c consisting of data for error check at the time of reading out and padding for matching the byte number of the packets 31 with 32×n bytes.
