PURPOSE: To obtain a trioxane suitable as a curing agent for epoxy resins or as a material for sublimable preparations in a high yield industrially at a low cost with no concomitant offensive odor. CONSTITUTION: This trioxane, 2,4,6-trialkyl-1,3,5-trioxane of the formula (R is a 1-6C straight or branched chain alkyl group), is obtained by bringing an aldehyde of formula R-CHO (e.g. n-propylaldehyde, iso-propylaldehyde) into contact with methanesulfonic acid in an inert organic solvent such as n-hexane or n-pentane to effect cyclic trimerization. The reaction is pref. carried out using the methanesulfonic acid pref. at 0.02-0.04 equivalents based on the aldehyde at -5 to 0 deg.C for 30min to 2hr. The compound of the formula, which is nontoxic, nonirritant, tasteless, odorless and colorless, has a form of crystal moderately sublimable, having melting point of 62.5 deg.C. |
