The invention relates to a prosthesis, in particular a load-bearing endoprosthesis for hard tissue, provided with an anchor element for anchoring the prosthesis in the bone, which anchor element comprises a rigid core, the outer surface of which is coated with a substantially continuous elastomeric covering layer. The thickness of the elastomeric covering layer is preferably matched to the local stress conditions at the interface between the anchor element and the tissue surrounding the element. If appropriate, means which promote bone growth may be incorporated in the elastomeric covering layer.
