摘要 PURPOSE: To suppress the movement of liquid crystal molecules and to prevent the occurrence of defects according to a change in cell thickness. CONSTITUTION: Particulates 9a,... and particulates 9b,... varying in sizes are incorporated into insulating films 3a, 3b of a liquid crystal display element. These particulates 9a, 9b are exposed on the surfaces of the insulating films 3a, 3b and further, many pieces of ruggedness are formed on the surfaces of orientation control films 5a, 5b. Then, even if the liquid crystal molecules tend to move according to the driving of the liquid crystal display element, the movement is suppressed by such ruggedness. Consequently, the orientation defect according to the change in the cell thickness is prevented. The ruggedness is formed by differences in the heights of the particulates 9a and the particulates 9b varying in sizes and, therefore, the distribution of the ruggedness is made more uniform than in the case by the particulates of single size. The marked effect of suppressing the movement of the liquid crystal molecules and preventing the orientation defects is thus obtd.
