CARBONACEOUS MEMBER AND MAGNETIC RECORDING MEDIUM AND THEIR PRODUCTION

PURPOSE: To obtain the subject member capable of manifesting goof lubricity, water repellency and corrosion resistance by firm application thereof onto a carbon member with good orienting properties by irradiating the surface of the carbonaceous member with ultraviolet rays in a vacuum and then coating the irradiated surface with a lubricant. CONSTITUTION: This member is obtained by irradiating the surface of a carboaceous member containing carbon or an organic polymeric compound in a vacuum, preferably 1×10<-3> to 1×10<-6> Torr vacuum with ultraviolet rays and then coating the irradiated surface with a lubricant [a fluorine-based lubricant containing a polar group such as C5 F11 (H2 )10 COOH]. The wavelength of the ultraviolet rays is preferably 10-260nm. The distribution density of free radicals on the surface of the carbonaceous member before coating thereof with the lubricant after the irradiation with the ultraviolet rays is preferably 3000-30000 radicals/μm<2> from the viewpoint of adhesion and orienting properties of the lubricant. Furthermore, e.g. a carbon film 3 which is a protecting film for a magnetic recording medium having a ferromagnetic metallic thin film 2 on a nonmagnetic substrate 1 is cited as the carbonaceous member and a lubricant layer 4 is formed on the carbon film 3.
