PURPOSE: To provide a carbonaceous material excellent in doping-dedoping performance of a lithium ion, and provide a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery having high energy density. CONSTITUTION: A low expansive carbon caking material on which the carbon content is not less than 90% and a softening start temperature is not less than 300 deg.C and the total expansion coefficient in a thermal expansion test is not more than 10% is used as a carbonaceous raw material, and this is baked, and is formed as a carbonaceous material. Baking is performed in an inert gas atmosphere or under reduce pressure of 10<-1> Torr, an a baking temperature is set at 700 deg.C to 1300 deg.C. A nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery is constituted by using the carbonaceous material as a negative electrode active material and using a lithium composite oxide as a positive electrode active material and also containing organic electrolyte. It is desirable that the carbonaceous material is sintered together with a current collecting body and is formed as a sintered compound material and this sintered compound material is used as a negative electrode. |
