Process for producing C16 to C22 fatty alcohol derivatives of general formula (I): R<1>(vic. OH, OR<2>)-OH in which R<1> is a vicinally-disubstituted residue of a fatty alcohol with 16 to 22 carbon atoms, which contains at least one structural element of general formula (II): -CH(OH)-CH(OR<2>)- and R<2> is an alkyl residue with 1 to 22 carbon atoms, a single-bond residue of a polyol with 2 to 12 carbon atoms and 2 to 4 OH groups or a group of general formula (III) in which R<3> is a double-bond residue of a polyol with 2 to 12 carbon atoms and 2 to 4 OH groups at least two of which are primary OH groups, and R<1> is as defined above, in which C16 to C22 fatty alcohol esters of formula (IV): R<1>(vic. OH, OR<2>)-O-CO-R<4> or formula (IVa) are treated with water under pressure and at temperatures from 180 to 250 DEG C, without side reactions, in particular self-condensation.
