The cell is a prefabricated steel cage which provides refuge and enables survival against earthquakes. It can be integrated into existing buildings, without structural modification. The cage has relief evacuation orifices on each of its faces and will not deform. It may be assembled from a limited number of flat panels, fitting together by tongued edges and pins. The panels may be rectangular, with symmetrical diagonal support tubes, welded at each end and with interlocking square profile edges, welded peripherally. Ventilation (12) and an access door (11) may be provided, and the cage large enough for two persons. It may be provided with lighting, a siren, a location beacon, breathing apparatus and cases of provisions.
