PURPOSE: To prevent corrosion of a cathode using a protective film excellent in water and heat resistance and in durability so as to extend the life of an organic electroluminescent element comprising an anode, an organic-compound film and a cathode all provided on a substrate by forming the specific protective film over the cathode. CONSTITUTION: In an organic electroluminescent element which comprises an anode 3, an organic-compound film 4 [e.g. a film of N, N'-diphenyl-N, N'-bis (3-methylphenyl) 1,1'-biphenyl 4, 4'-diamine] serving as a hole transport layer, and a cathode 6, all provided on a substrate 2, a polyurea protective film 7 is formed over the cathode. The protective film 7 is formed by vaporizing a polyurea-forming monomer (e.g. 4,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane and 4,4'- diphenylmethane diisocyanate) in a vacuum, evaporating and polymerizing it on the cathode to form a polyurea film, and then crosslinking the polyurea by application of ultraviolet rays. |
