PURPOSE: To prevent the occurrence of the abnormality of a read image due to the behavioral fluctuation of the original caused when the original passes through a reading position by rotating the upstream end part and the downstream end part of a movable original glass plate only by a specified angle in an up-and-down direction. CONSTITUTION: When the leading end part of the original is carried to the reading position A through a carrying path 13, the upstream end part 3b' of the movable original glass plate 3b is rotated downward by a minute angleθ(0 deg.<θ<±30 deg.) around a rotational center C, and also, the downstream end part 3b" is rotated so as to retreat downward at a prescribed timing after the leading end part of the original passes by the upstream end part 3b'. Thus, the original leading end can smoothly enter the reading position A and also the trailing end of the original can smoothly withdraw from the position A. That is, by retreating the upstream end part of the movable original glass plate when the original leading end enters the reading position, the carrying path just above the upstream end part is widened, then, blurring, etc., caused by the collision of the original leading end with the glass plate is prevented.
