PURPOSE: To provide a high efficiency of nonlinear optical material suitable for practical use which has a wide service wave length scope and a high speed responsiveness, and furthermore, its operation input light strength is small, and to provide a high functional nonlinear optical device using such a high efficiency of nonlinear optical material. CONSTITUTION: A nonlinear optical material which consists of a poly arylene ethynylene shown in the formula (in which Ar and Ar' show a substituted or a nonsubstituted heteroaromatic ring, Ar has a donor property as to theπconjugation, Ar' has an acceptor property as to theπconjugation, n and m is an integral number of 1 to 6, and at least one side of them is more than 2) is provided. And a nonlinear optical device using a nonlinear optical material in which the optical medium with a nonlinear refractive index is theπelectron conjugated high polymer is provided.
