A massage system includes a massage unit (1) arranged to be reciprocated vertically along a shaft (2). Additionally, the shaft (2), and hence the massage unit (1), is arranged to be pivoted about a pivot axis (3). Such an arrangement enables a choice of massage actions, by selectively enabling or disabling the vertical movement along the shaft (2) and the pivoting action about the pivot axis (3). The pivoting action (3) is controlled by means of a cam arrangement (4) consisting of two cams mounted respectively at the top and bottom of a cam shaft (5). The system is located within the back of chair, and the cam arrangement (4) is connected between the back of the chair and a frame (6) to which the shaft (2) is connected. The motors used in the massage system are controlled by a triac/diac circuit.
