Use of a DNA sequence (I), or its derivs., comprising (linked in sequence) (a) the -402 to -130 (272 bp) region of the prp-1 promoter; (b) the TATA box region (-46 to +8) of the CaMV 35S RNA promoter; (c) the beta -glucuronidase (GUS) coding region of the E. coli uidA gene, and (d) the polyadenylation sequence of the rbcS-3C gene of pea, for identifying cpds. (II) that can induce a plant's own defence mechanisms against pests is new. Also claimed are: (1) transgenic plants or their parts, contg. (I) can be used to identify (II); (2) the transgenic plants, their parts or reproductive material, contg. (I) in the genome, excluding potato, and (3) a test kit for carrying out above mentioned identification, comprising reagents and devices and plant prods. contg. (I) or its deriv.
