A computer is used as a server (1) to provide computer data, e.g. software, and a second computer as a client (2) to receive the data. Both client and server are equipped with telecommunication units (6, 7), connected together via a telephone network or data cables (3, 4, 5). The telecommunications unit (7) of the client is equipped with a permanent storage (8). The server sends information to this storage before downloading data, and can request verification information from it before completing the transfer of software. In this way, downloading of software can be restricted to authorised clients.
