A hand held stripping tool for wall coverings, especially non-porous wall coverings, comprises a body with a wall contacting skid 13c or roller (120 Figs. 5a, 5b) and a hand grip portion 13. A blade carrier 10 receives at least one sharp cutting blade 11 and the blade is positioned at an angle so as to face either forwardly and to the right or forwardly and to the left. The blade carrier is secured to the body by means of a nut and screw 14, 19. The blade may be selectably positioned in one of said orientations. Alternatively two blades may be used. Advantageously the body is provided with deflection surfaces (118 Fig. 6b) extending smoothly from the blade position. The forward portion of the body is V-shaped in the manner of a snow plough. Movement of the tool in a longitudinal direction cuts through the wall covering and lifts it from the surface. <IMAGE>
