摘要 The ribbed optical waveguide includes a waveguiding layer (12) with at least one quantum well layer (121). The waveguiding layer and the rib (20) have dimensions such that optical amplification for a TM-mode is greater than for a TE mode. The rib is tapered along its longitudinal axis. The intensity (I) and/or phase (omega) of the light generated in the waveguide is anisotropically changed by an electrical charge carrier. The waveguiding layer has a complex refractive index sandwiched by semiconductor layers (11,13) of a lower real refractive index. The semiconductor layers have different conductivities (p,n).
