A sealing device for shafts comprises at least one two part sealing ring (2). The sealing ring (2) has on its inner periphery (24) a plurality of annular sealing ribs (26) and, between them, annular collecting grooves (32). The lowest portions of the collecting grooves (32) are open to a return slot (34) which is formed below them and in one end face of the sealing ring (2). By this means, oil can flow from the collecting grooves (32) through the oil return slot (34) into an oil sump. The ring also has on the annular periphery an annular oil nose or a liquid collecting funnel (44) Fig 6, which collects oil thrown out centifugally by a rotating shaft and directs it downwards in both circumferential directions. A peripheral rib (10) locates the ring and allows it to move radially.
