A catalyst for the cleaning of an exhaust gas is made up of a carrier and several catalytic layers formed on it. The inner layer contains a Pd constituent and nickel oxide. Also claimed are (i) a catalyst where, in addn., one of the outer layers contains a Rh constituent;. (ii) a catalyst where the Pd content in the inner layer makes up 7 to 93% relative to the NiO constituent; and (iii) a catalyst for cleaning automobile exhaust gases that contain a S contg. constituent.
