The flat support or base material is first applied to the exterior casing (18) of cylinder (14) and there held by e.g. needles whereupon cylinder and material are placed in the drum (12) so that when cylinder and drum are rotated the material is slung centrifugally off cylinder casing (18) onto the inside surface (16) of the drum. The cylinder is then removed from the drum and replaced by the coating device (42). The cylinder needles can be adjusted and are retracted into the cylinder after material transfer onto the drum. The end rotation speed of the drum exceeds that of the cylinder and this speed is adjusted appropriate to the material and the impregnated fluid. The impregnated material is withdrawn from the drum by the cylinder and passed on to a process station. The material is fed as edge-controlled stock into a custom cutout station upstream of the cylinder stage in a system requiring a first drive (26) for the hollow drum, second drive for the fluid coater and a third drive (36) to run the cylinder up to a speed appropriate to material transfer onto the rotating drum.
