The method can regulate variably the error tone generation time in a key phone by using a software, not a complicated hardware. The method comprises a 1st step of setting and registering the error tone generation time; a 2nd step of determining if a message, received from an external key system, is an error message; a 3rd step of generating the error tone for the set time by enabling a port for the error tone generation if the message is the error message; a 4th step of checking if the set time has elapsed; a 5th step of releasing the error tone generation by disabling the port if the set time has elapsed.
