<p>In the hydraulically assisted steering system disclosed herein, a hydraulic pump (11) for powering a steering servo (17) is in turn driven either from the vehicle's engine (21), through an electrically controlled clutch (29), or by an electric motor (33) which can drive the pump (11) independently of the vehicle's engine (21). A signal is provided which varies as a function of vehicles's speed and disengagement of the clutch (29) is enabled for vehicle speeds above a predeterminable threshold, thereby to reduce energy consumption. The clutch (29) is engaged, independently of vehicle speed, under high load, e.g. emergency situations.</p> |
