A method of and an apparatus for restricting an engine output on highlands in such a manner that the exhaust temperature is kept within a permissible range to maintain the performance and durability of an internal combustion engine. This apparatus comprises a receiver (2) adapted to receive radio waves from artificial satellites (S1, S2, S3), a position detector (3) adapted to detect the coordinates of the actual position of an engine (E) on the basis of the data received with the radio waves and calculate the altitude, a timer (4) adapted to detect the time at which the coordinates of the actual position are detected, and a data processor (6) adapted to predict the maximum temperature on the basis of the altitude and detected time, compute an output restriction rate of the engine (E) in accordance with the predicted maximum temperature and altitude, and output a control signal corresponding to the output restriction rate to a fuel injection rate controller (1).
