<p>A liquid crystal display device using a thin-film diode or a thin-film transistor as a switching device. A method of producing the device comprises the steps of forming a protective film on the entire surface of a substrate on which switching devices and signal electrodes or scanning electrodes are formed, forming openings in the protective film between the electrodes, and etching away the remaining portion of each electrode material inside the openings. For example, the protective film is disposed on the entire surface of the substrate (1) on which a back-to-back connection of two thin-film diodes (11 and 12) is provided corresponding to each pixel electrode, and opening portions (36) having openings (36c, 36d and 36e) are disposed between the pixel electrodes (6), between the signal electrode (13) and the pixel electrode (6) and between the signal electrodes (13), respectively. The remaining portion of the electrode material inside the opening (36) is removed by etching. Because short-circuits between the electrodes as indicated by (21, 32 and 34) can be eliminated, surface defects can be drastically reduced, display quality as well as production yield can be improved.</p> |
