The roller surface (4) has indentations for retaining air entrained by the web. The roller has a hollow, cylindrical body, open at one or both ends, contg. through perforations (5) on the periphery of the cylindrical face. Pref. the thickness of the roller wall is 0.5 to 3 mm and the perforation dia. is 0.1 to 0.55 mm. Typically the peripheral roller surface is formed by a round, fine mesh fabric 0.5 to 3 mm. thick with mesh width of 5 to 50 mu. It may be surface treated and linked at the end faces. The open ends may be fitted with lids (2) each with a centre axis (1) and apertures (8).
