The drill chuck has the cheeks (5) running in guides (6) to adapt to the drill bit size. For large bits the cheeks are retracted into the chuck with the rear ends of the cheeks leaving the guides and entering a ring-shaped space (15) outside the spindle bearing (12) for a compact, low-length assembly. The chuck cheeks rotate in the ring-shaped space which is closed to the rear. The outer flange (18) of the space has an overlapping profile with the rotating chuck to form a closed fitting.
