The air for the suspension units (4) is delivered, discharged or shut off by a control system dependent on the deviation of the main axle (2') from the desired height. The latter is increased to a predetermined desired valve when the actual height of the main axle remains unaltered on reduction of pressure in the suspension units. With the vehicle in motion the desired height can be returned to normal. This can be done as soon as the travel speed rises above a predetermined and very low value.
