<p>A battery charger 31 has a solar cell assembly 39 for charging a battery 32, and a compartment 35 for stowing the solar cell assembly 39 when not charging. The charger may have a battery mount section 33 on one surface and a solar cell stowing recess 35 with a cover 36 on an opposite surface. The solar cell assembly may fold for stowing, or solar panel units (410, Fig.4) may be stacked for stowing and electrically and mechanically coupled together by snap fasteners (412) for charging. An alternative charger in the form of a bag (61, Figs.6-9) has a heat ventilating section (64) adjacent which a portable phone (69) to be charged can be held within the bag. Snap fasteners (66) extend through a side of the bag to connect to a solar cell assembly (610) for charging, the assembly (610) being folded and stowed in the bag when not charging. A hinge arrangement between solar cell panels may incorporate flexible interconnecting leads (122, Figs. 12,13), pivot rods (128) and a protective laminate film (123) over front and rear surfaces of the assembly. Alternatively, a pivot rod (168, Figs. 16-20) connected to a lead on a first panel may engage in a cylindrical section (169) fixed to a lead on a second panel, with a coil spring (167) being located around the rod (168) within section (169). A further hinge has a coil spring (217, Figs.21-24) acting axially on a pivot rod (218) in a cylindrical section (219).</p> |
