1,8-Naphthalimide derivs. of formula (Ia-c) are new: where R1= H, halogen, NO2, 2-5 C alkoxycarbonyl, 1-4 C acyl, 8-24 C aralkenyl, or amino substd. by 0-2 of 1-30 C alkyl, 6-18C aryl and 7-24 C aralkyl, where the above hydrocarbon chains are opt. substd. by OH and/or COOH; or morpholinyl, piperidinyl, pyrrolidinyl or piperazinyl substd. by 0-2 of OH, Me, Et and Ph; R2 = H or 1-30 C alkyl, 6-18 C aryl or 7-24 C aralkyl opt. substd. by OH and/or COOH, provided that at least one of R1 and R2 bears an OH or COOH; R3 and R4 = 1-30 C alkyl, 6-18 C aryl or 7-24C aralkyl opt. substd. by OH and/or COOH, provided that at least one bears an OH or COOH gp.; R5 and R6 = H halogen, NO2 1-30 C alkyl, 1-30 C alkoxy, 6-18 C aryl, 7-24 C aralkyl, 2-5 C alkoxycarbonyl, 1-4 C acyl or di(1-6 C alkyl)amino; aliphatic chains in R1-R4 may be interrupted by one or more heteroatoms (O, N and/or S) and/or one or more phenylene gps.
