PURPOSE: To obtain a light-weight carbon material low in bulk density, high in compressive strength, excellent in heat insulating property and durability and appropriate for a heat insulating material by dispersing the carbon fibers of specified length in the carbonized or graphitized thermosetting resin to bind the fibers together. CONSTITUTION: One hundred pts.wt. of carbon fibers A having 0.1-20mm average length and 20-99 pts.wt. of a carbonizable or graphitizable thermosetting resin powder are dispersed in water and mixed to form a sheet (a). Meanwhile, 100 pts.wt. of the carbon fiber and 100-500 pts.wt. of the resin powder are dispersed in water and mixed to form a sheet (b). The sheets (a) and (b) are alternately arranged so that the sheet (a) constitutes the uppermost face and the sheet (b) the lowermost face. The obtained laminate is heated to 80-250 deg.C at which the resin is not completely solidified, press-formed, cooled under pressure and densified. The sheet is reheated to 120-250 deg.C, expanded to completely solidify the resin and then carbonized or graphitized. A lightweight carbon material having <=0.2g/cm<3> bulk density and >=20kg/cm<2> compressive strength is obtained in this way. |
