PURPOSE: To produce a large amount of an optically active diol which is useful as an intermediate for medicines and agrochemicals or a starting substance of liquid crystals by allowing a microorganism, NSB2010 belonging to Paracoccus to act on a cyclic carbonate ester. CONSTITUTION: A high-concentration (5%) solution of a cyclic carbonate ester of the formula ((n) is 1, 2; R is a 1-11C alkyl, a 2-11C alkenyl) is treated with the culture mixture, cell bodies, cell-treated material of or an enzyme derived from of a microorganism, NSB2010 belonging to Paracoccus (FERM P-14751) capable of producing an optically active diol of the formula: RC*H(OH)(CH2 )n OH from the carbonate ester to obtain a high concentration aqueous solution of the objective optically active diol. This diol is easily isolated and purified from the solution. |
