The eyes (12) of vehicle's (18) occupants are shaded from the direct or reflected rays of the sun (14) shining through a transparent windshield (16). The system includes a normally transparent envelope (20) which is adjacent to the windshield (16). A layer of normally transparent activatable liquid crystal material, which is adapted to have its light transmissive characteristics selectively changed in response to an electric field, is carried by the sheet. A device (42) for determining the position of the sun sends signals to communicate the position of the sun (14) relative to the windshield (16). In response to such signals, an electric field is applied to selected portions (32) of the normally transparent activatable liquid crystal material to activate and change the light transmissive characteristics of those portions, with the result that the direct or reflected rays from the sun (14) can be selectively shaded from the eyes (12) of occupants within the vehicle (18). |
