The system for identifying a firearm includes an electronic circuit (1) carrying information about the weapon which is integrated into a non-conductive part of the weapon - for example in a part of the butt. The information held within the circuit may be read at a distance by a portable device (2) which is able to activate the circuit and gain access to the memory without need for physical contacts. The electronic circuit may include an EPROM which carries a unique code which cannot be forged, installed during mfr.. The circuit may alternatively include an EEPROM with a microprocessor by which the EEPROM may be reprogrammed. The portable reading device may include a microprocessor and battery, with an RS232 or TTL outlet enabling its connection to a computer system.
