The laser telemetry system for measuring the distance to a target comprises a source (S) emitting an intensity modulated measurement laser beam towards the target, and a transmission lens and a reception lens. A photo-receiver (88) receives a fraction of the light reflected by the target and converts this into an electrical signal. The distance to the target is determined by measuring the out and return time of the transmitted light. The transmission lens and the reception lens are formed from a single conjugate lens (56) mounted in a box which ensures precise positioning w.r.t. the lens, the optical transmission axis (X) and the optical reception axis (Y) along which light returns from the target.
