The screw spindle is hollow and is made of steel. It contains a rod (2) of a material, the thermal expansion coefft. of which is less than that of steel. The spindle is tensioned by tensioning devices (7, 13) supported by the rod. The tension on the spindle is less than the yield point of the steel. The tensioning devices may be formed by pressure bolts (7) and/or plugs (13). There may be a bearing (5) for the rod between the rod and the boring (9) in the spindle. Axial adjustment and centring devices (6), e.g. worm screws, for the rod may be included in the tensioning devices.
