Motor vehicle headlamp with widely scattering stepped lens

The reflecting surface (2) around the single-filament lamp bulb (4) is shaped e.g. by computer-aided design with upper and lower portions (2a,2b) having different reflecting properties. The upper portion (2a) having a shorter focal length gives a distribution of light below the horizontal midline (X-X) and an oblique line (X') rising at 15 deg. to the nearside. The lower portion (2b) gives a reflected and deflected beam also below the midline. The height (H) and breadth (L) of the reflecting surface are nearly equal. The lower part of the lens (8) has a row of inclined steps (8c) behind a prism (8b).
