The device includes a forming section (7) which has a reducing opening cross-section viewed in the wedging direction so that the connecting element in the course of its exit from the forming section is permanently deformed by the reciprocal convergence of the two sides of the ''U''. A magazine is provided for the connecting elements, and the guide section in its contour is adapted to the shape of the connecting element.
