The engine has an exhaust return pipe with a heat exchanger (9). This is cleaned via a compressed air unit, which feeds compressed air into the exhaust gas return pipe (8) against the flow direction of the exhaust. Fresh air under charging pressure is introduced from the charging air pipe (5), via the exhaust return valve (7), when this is in a position bridging the exhaust return pipe. Efficient control of the amount of exhaust gas recirculation may be achieved.
