When using a sensor (1) to detect a condition in a liquid (2), the addition of reagents (eg. acids, bases, buffers) is avoided by using electrochemical means (4, 7) to generate the appropriate environment in the detection region of the sensor (1). The electrode (4) can be used to generate a raised or lowered pH as required for the sensor measurement. The sensor can contact the liquid (2) or be out of contact therewith.
