Purificn. of carbohydrate cpds. with surfactant activity, using compressed gases, comprises extracting the starting material with compressed propane (or a mixt. of this with up to 25 wt. % of butane) at 8-150 (esp. 20-80) bar and less than 120 deg C. Solid starting materials are subjected to a solid/liquid extn.. Flowable to fluid starting materials are subjected to a liquid/liquid extn. (the extn. being carried out in a countercurrent. 3-15 g of compressed gas (mixt.) are used per g of starting material to be extracted. The prods. are sepd. by lowering the pressure and/or increasing the temp.
