Variable optical beam splitter/modulator

The beam splitter/modulator has a pair of prisms separated from one another by a gap which can be reduced by controlled deflection of one of the prisms. The gap width can be varied continuously between a value of zero and a given end value. Pref. the force used for deflection of the prism is provided by a spring mechanism, or by hydraulic, pneumatic, or piezoelectric device.
