The refractory comprises 25 wt.% sintered magnesia clinker having an average particle diameter of 5 to 3 mm, 25 wt.% sintered magnesia clinker having an average particle diameter of 3 to 1 mm, 15 wt.% sintered magnesia clinker having an average particle diameter of 1 mm or less, 15 wt.% fine powder of sintered magnesia clinker and 20 wt.% planar graphite. Preferably, the planar graphite is a medium graphite particles having an average particle diameter of 0.2 mm or less. The refractory has a high strength against thermal shock, oxidation and corrosion resistance.
