A spark-eroding wire electrode for cutting materials has a non-conducting core (1) provided with a conductive coating (2). When preferably short pulses are applied, the skin effect causes the current to flow only in a less than ten mu m thick layer below the surface, so that the non-conducting core does not reduce the current conductivity of the wire electrode. A material having a high tensile strength and capable of absorbing high tensile forces may be used for the core. The non-conducting core (1) prevents the wire electrode from breaking under thermal stresses.
