The invention concerns an encoding device with an encoding unit (VE) and an output register (AR) arranged thereafter. During a time interval ( tau 2) encoded output data (A) are formed from input data (E) fed to the encoding unit (VE), the encoded output data (A) then being written into the output register (AR). When the time interval ( tau 2) has elapsed, no further data are fed to the output register (AR) but the current consumption thereof does not alter. The encoding unit (VE) continues to generate output data (A) until a time interval ( tau 1) has elapsed. The encoding device according to the invention prevents an external observer drawing any conclusions from the current consumption of the encoding device about the actual duration of the generation of the encoded output data present in the output register (AR).
