The test system has a first lambda probe (12) located in front of the catalyser (11) for regulating the air-fuel ratio of the engine and a second lambda probe(14) incorporated within the catalyser, adjacent the exhaust gas entry zone. Pref. the catalyser volume between the inlet of the catalyser and the second lambda probe is greater than the catalyser volume required for conversion of the exhaust emissions during stationary operation of the engine.
