The electrochemical sensor consists of a planar substrate (1) of glass-reinforced epoxy resin, an electronic pathway (2) made of silver for the signal output, an electrically conductive electrochemically active layer (3) based on ruthenium dioxide, which responds to changes in the pH value, and an insulating layer of organic polymer (4). These are set together by the usual techniques of thick film processing. For the sensor face, a paste holding ruthenium dioxide powder is applied to the substrate and hardened at temperatures under 200 degrees C. A reference electrode should be screen-printed on the substrate.
