A fiber optic interconnect assembly to interconnect first and second optical fiber cables terminated with corresponding first and second plug connectors, comprising, a coupler (13) having external slotted sleeves (23) surrounding sockets (20), latching nubs (31) on the slotted sleeves (23) for bayonet type connection to first plug connectors, and an adapter assembly (15) having a receptacle housing (18) surrounding receptacles (17) with catch pieces (40) for connection to second plug connectors, and slotted sleeves (38) partly within the sockets (20) of the receptacles (17) and partly within sockets (36) of the receptacles (17) and constructed to receive the first and second connector plugs in alignment end to end.
