A telecommunicataion system for providing voice and visual data communications over a conventional telephone line (16, 26) between a voice response unit (VRU) (25) and a number of subscriber stations. The VRU (25) includes a processor (20), a voice card (28) for transmitting prerecorded voice messages, and data circuit-terminating equipment (DCE) (24) for data communications. Each subscriber station includes a processor (10), a modem, a display (15), a telephone (12), and a DCE (14). Both DCEs (14, 24) include a modem, a start signal generator for transmitting a start signal over the telephone line (16, 26) prior to transmission of data by the modem, a start signal detector, and a switch that automatically switches the DCE (14, 24) from voice mode to data mode after a start signal is received. The VRU processor (20) controls the voice card (28) and VRU DCE (24) to provide voice and data communications over the telephone line (16, 26) with the subscriber station in accordance with a preprogrammed script. |
