A process for the preparation of ethylene oxide by oxidation of ethylene with oxygen in the presence of silver-containing and promoter-containing catalysts, wherein at least two silver catalysts of different selectivity and activity are used in a combined catalyst bed, in which the reaction mixture, on passing through the reactor, comes into contact with progressively more active and progressively less selective silver catalysts.
